Population data and map sources
This tool combines a public basemap with WorldPop population raster data so you can estimate population inside any custom area.
Population data: WorldPop
Population estimates come from the WorldPop Global2 dataset for 2025. WorldPop publishes gridded population rasters that make custom-area estimates possible even when your boundary does not match a standard administrative area.

Map data: OpenFreeMap, OpenMapTiles, and OpenStreetMap
The visible basemap uses styles and tiles built on OpenFreeMap, OpenMapTiles, and OpenStreetMap data. These providers supply the coastline, roads, labels, and other geographic context used by the interactive map.

Why raster data is used
Raster population data is a strong fit for this project because users draw their own shapes. Instead of forcing the estimate to snap to a city or municipality boundary, the app sums population pixels inside the exact drawn area.
Licensing and attribution
Keep the on-map attribution visible when reusing or embedding the site. The map data and population data each have their own attribution and licensing requirements, which is why both are shown directly on the map UI.
