This page explains the cookies, local storage entries, and similar browser technologies used by the site itself and by third-party services that load through it.

Cookies set by the site itself

The site does not currently set its own first-party cookies for core map rendering, drawing, population calculations, or navigation between pages.

Local storage used by the site

The site currently stores UI preferences and your privacy choice in browser localStorage:

• population-polygons-area-unit remembers whether area is displayed in square kilometers or square miles.
• population-polygons-pen-hint-dismissed remembers whether the pen-tool hint halo has already been dismissed.
• pc_privacy_consent_v1 stores whether you accepted or declined optional analytics in the first-party privacy notice.

Third-party cookies and similar technologies

Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies, web beacons, IP addresses, and similar identifiers to serve ads on this site. Google AdSense may use these technologies to deliver ads, measure ad performance, limit repeated ad display, prevent fraud, and personalize advertising where applicable. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to users based on their visit to this site and/or other sites on the Internet.

If third-party vendors or ad networks other than Google are used to serve ads through Google's systems, those vendors may also place and read cookies on users' browsers and use web beacons or IP addresses to collect information as a result of ad serving.

Cloudflare Web Analytics is also used when you accept optional analytics in the first-party privacy notice. According to Cloudflare's documentation, that analytics product does not use cookies or localStorage for its measurement.

Google Analytics loads in the same way when you accept; it may use cookies or similar technologies to measure aggregate usage as described in Google's cookie documentation.

The map itself loads resources from external map and tile providers. Those requests expose normal web request metadata, and any cookies or similar technologies used on those providers' own domains are governed by their respective policies rather than by this site.

Consent in the EEA, UK, and Switzerland

Visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland see a first-party privacy notice with accept and decline for optional analytics before those scripts load. Google AdSense may also show a consent message before personalized ads or ad-related cookies that require consent are used, in line with Google's EU User Consent Policy. Visitors can accept, reject, or customize their choices in Google's message when it appears, and can reopen the first-party notice from the Cookies page.

Why these technologies are used

Browser storage is used to remember lightweight interface preferences. Third-party ad technologies may be used to display ads, measure performance, detect abuse, and operate advertising systems. Analytics helps understand reliability and aggregate usage trends.

How to control cookies and storage

You can clear or block cookies in your browser settings and clear this site's localStorage in your browser's site-data controls.

You can opt out of personalized advertising by Google by visiting Google Ad Settings. You can also opt out of personalized advertising from many third-party vendors by visiting aboutads.info/choices (Digital Advertising Alliance) or, in Europe, youronlinechoices.eu.
